The last month and a half has been a sweet and sleepless blur. I am excited to put down into words the birth story of our first born, Caleb James. He was born on November 30th, 2015 at 11:59pm, weighing 7 pounds, 12 ounces and measuring 21 inches long. He currently loves being cuddled, smiling and keeping mommy awake when she wants to sleep. It’s hard to believe he is already 7 weeks old, growing and changing everyday.
When we first found out that we were expecting a sweet little boy, I have to admit I was a bit nervous about the labour and delivery that was to come. It was through the care of midwives that I gained a strong knowledge and understanding of the stages of labour and possible interventions that might be necessary, along with various options that are available to help cope with the pain. After months of care with the midwives and having them answer a multitude of questions that myself and husband had, I knew that I felt prepared and confident in both myself and my husband, knowing that we both understood the process and what to expect.
Our story begins after having contractions for two long days, we finally went to the hospital on Monday, November 30th at 2:30am, with contractions about 5 minutes apart and slightly in fear that we would end up having the baby at home or on the side of the road. Once we arrived at the hospital our midwife arrived shortly after and checked to see how far along we were in the ob triage room, he was only 1 cm but she insisted that we stay since it was a far drive for us and again as first time parents we really didn’t know what to expect and really didn’t want to have our baby in the car. Although she assured us it would be hours possibly even not until the following day that our little peanut would arrive, I didn’t believe her as I was certain the intense contractions meant he was coming any minute!
As the day progressed sure enough she was right and at only 5cm by noon I was feeling exhausted from the lack of sleep and from working through each contraction. My favourite thing to do to work through the contractions was stand in the shower with the warm water running over my belly, it was sooo… comforting. Since things were progressing VERY slowly, she broke my water in hopes of moving thins along. A few hours had gone by and nothing much had changed, at this point I was struggling to stay on top of the contractions so she suggested an epidural to allow me to have some rest before the real work of pushing our sweet baby boy would begin. I agreed, a little terrified of the huge needle, but once the epidural kicked in it was a sweet relief to finally get some sleep. I spiked a fever shortly after the epidural kicked in so they had to administer pitocin to help regulate the contractions and control the fever. It wasn’t long after that my contractions were coming at regular intervals and all we could do is let my body continue to work.
While the epidural was helping me get some much needed rest, it even allowed me to watch one of my favourite HGTV shows, “Leave it to Bryan”, my body was hard at work and things continued to progress. During this time I was getting super hungry, popsicles and water were just not satisfying me anymore so my hubby ordered me some chicken soup without the noodles, it might sound terrible but after hours of not eating it tasted amazing and helped me to feel a bit more nourished.
Around 11:00pm that night, he was finally ready to make his debut and I began to push. My midwife had me do a few practice pushes and once I got the hang of how to push, things happened quick and shortly after at exactly 11:59pm Caleb James arrived, just shy a minute to be a December baby! 😉 He ended up swallowing a small amount of muconeum on his way out so nurses from the nicu rushed in to extract it from his throat and check him over to make sure everything was fine. In those initial seconds my husband and I were both a bit confused and feeling anxious to hear his anticipated cry…. it felt like forever but it was just seconds they had him cleaned up, weighed and laying on my chest with both of us in tears of joy to finally see our beautiful baby boy and yes we heard his sweet little cry. We both were in awe as we marveled at our precious baby boy as tears and smiles overwhelmed our hearts. He was finally here, our little blessing!
I made my very first vlog of Caleb’s birth story and first month with us. It’s a bit long but there were so many cute photos it was so hard to narrow it down. The video tells our story, from the very first day that we found out we were expecting, to the day we told our family, the gender reveal party and the growing baby bump. The video then continues with our arrival to the hospital, some of his very first visitors and lot’s of photos of all the baby snuggles and cuteness from his very first month. I hope that you enjoyed reading our birth story and viewing all the cuteness that is Caleb!
