I created these sweet diy bird seed feeders with the help of friends to use as a thank you gift for guests at our Autumn baby shower. They fit perfectly with the rustic and natural elements of our outdoor baby shower and are an adorable little treat for the birds.
• 3/4 cup flour
• 1/2 cup water
• 1 packet unflavoured gelatin
• 3 tablespoons corn syrup
• 4 cups birdseed
Mix together the flour, gelatin and birdseed. Then slowly add the water and corn syrup, stirring constantly. I found that if you add the corn syrup last it made it disperse more evenly throughout the birdseed mixture.
Use vegetable oil or cooking spray to coat the heart cookie cutter. Then lay out a piece of parchment paper on your work area.
Fill the inside of the cookie cutter with the birdseed mixture, packing tightly.
Using a barbecue skewer, press a hole into the heart shape to make a hole for hanging.
Carefully remove the ornament from the cookie cutter and lay it on the parchment paper to dry.
Once the ornaments are dry, add twine for hanging and decorate.
I chose to place the feeders in cellophane bags, tied closed with twine, raffia and a small Thank You tag. The tag was cut from craft paper, then I stamped the word “thank you” on it with black ink.
**Note: I put the feeders in the cellophane bags a week in advance and kept them in a cool dry area in our house to ensure that no moisture would form in the bags, creating mould.
