I love pretty banners, who doesn’t right! I have made lots of these burlap banners for a variety of different occasions and have tried a few different techniques. The technique I am sharing today is probably the most simple and the one I use most often. This is an easy no sew burlap banner that I made to add a touch of Valentine’s to our home.
- White paint
- Letter stencils of your choice
- Ribbon (optional)
Cut burlap into squares, approximately 8 inches by 6 inches.
Fold burlap in half and measure 1.5 inches up from the middle fold. Then cut the fabric on an angle from the centre fold outwards to the edge of the fabric. Unfold the burlap to see if you like the shape and adjust as necessary. Repeat this step on each burlap square
Cut the jute to the desired length, leaving extra on the ends for hanging. Fold the top of the burlap over 1 inch, then place the jute underneath this fold. Using your hot glue gun, glue the edge of the folded burlap into place. Make sure to place a piece of cardboard or paper underneath your burlap, as the glue will go through the holes in the burlap. Repeat this for each flag.
Use a stencil or freehand the letters and heart onto each burlap flag. Again remember to place a piece of paper underneath the flags before painting as the paint will go through the burlap. I used simple stencils that I purchased from the dollar store and then I connected the open areas to give the letters a more elegant look. For the heart on the letter “o” I used a small wooden heart that I had in my Valentines decor stash to trace the shape onto the burlap flag.
Leave the paint to dry and then attach the ribbons or more jute to either end if desired.
That’s it! Just hang it up. I used sticky tack to attach our banner to the shelving unit in our kitchen and then just let the jute ends hang down. I love the subtle touch of Valentines in our home. Love is in the air! 😉
