Happy Tuesday friends! With fall just around the corner, I seem to be in the nesting mood, I am slowly starting to hang pictures and artwork on the walls and even get a few long awaited projects complete. One of them was this Coca-Cola crate spice rack for our kitchen. I purchased this old Coca-Cola crate last year at an antique store to use in our kitchen to keep all of our spice jars organized.
The jars were purchased from Canadian Tire and are 3 ounce glass spice jars. Each one was then filled with a spice and labelled on the bottom with temporary stickers. It has taken me a year to finally decide on how I wanted to label the tops of the jars, first I thought permanent marker or maybe stickers but then this weekend I finally decided on chalkboard paint! I painted each jar using a medium sized paint brush, applying the chalkboard paint in the same direction, similar to the chalkboard I made here. It took three coats of chalkboard paint to fully cover the jars.
Once the jars were dry, the next day I used my paint pen to create a design around the edge of the lids and write the name of the spice. The design I chose was a simple one, making a circle around the outter edge of the lid, leaving just enough space to add in some detail. Then going around the outer edge of the circle I had drawn, I created a bunch more half circles. For the text I free handed it, trying to make it look as uniform as possible. There are a few imperfections, but that gives it character right. 😉
Here is what the finished spice jars look like in the old crate. I am in love with this look, it’s the perfect mix of new and old, and it also is an easy way to keep our spice collection organized!
There are a few jars that are empty at the moment, so we will use those ones for the things that we may not have all the time, labeling them using chalk instead of the paint pen.
What do you think of my Coca-Cola crate turned spice rack? How do you keep all your spices organized? Share your comments below, I would love to hear from you!
